The museum depicts the archaeology and social history of Montgomeryshire, with many fascinating objects linked to early Britain, the Bronze Age, Roman life, farming, Laura Ashley, the Montgomery Canal, the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, and the Cambrian Railway, to name a few. There is an outreach programme whereby the museum can loan out its handling collection to schools, colleges, nurseries, and residential care homes. With the recent merge with Welshpool Library, the site now offers a full library service including a wide range of reading and reference books, audiobooks, DVD's, WIFI, computer facilities, printing, and photocopying. The Library is also a Customer Service Point for the public to access certain Powys County Council services.
The opening hours are Monday to Tuesday, Thursday– Friday, 11am–1pm and 2pm–5pm. From June to August the Museum is open Saturday–Sunday, 10am–1pm and 2pm–5pm. From September to May it is open Saturday, 11am–2pm. It is always closed on a Wednesday.
