Wolfson College, University of Oxford

More about

The art collection at Wolfson College is unique amongst Oxford colleges in its dedication to acquiring primarily modern and contemporary artworks. Over the years, Wolfson’s collection has grown through the acquisition of works of art that reflect the College’s principles of modernity, interdisciplinary, multiculturalism and egalitarianism. The collection, largely donated by present and past members of Wolfson, or by the artists themselves, is augmented through purchases by the Arts Society, which maintains an active exhibitions programme, and through loans of significant artworks from individuals and arts organisations such as the Ashmolean Museum and the Arts Council. The collection consists mostly of paintings in oil and acrylic and works on paper, but also includes works in mixed media and a small, but fine, collection of sculpture. Major artists represented in the collection include Sir Anthony Caro, Gillian Ayres, M. C. Escher, Bert Irvin, Ben Nicholson and Bridget Riley. Whilst the College aims, where possible, to collect works from artists of national or international renown, it also remains committed to supporting emerging artists and local Oxfordshire talent through exhibitions and acquisitions.
