More about

Twelve paintings currently held at the University of Wales at Bangor are a collection formed by Charles Evans CB (1883–1961) in 1938 in honour of his Father, William Evans CB (1841–1919). Charles enjoyed collecting pictures and knew a lot about the London art market. So he decided to purchase twelve paintings to loan to the University of Wales, Bangor, for the enjoyment of the students and the staff. In September 1938, he wrote to the Principal Dr Emrys Evans and the minutes of the Fine Art Committee record that "it was unanimously resolved to recommend to the Council that the offer be accepted with gratitude". In 1939 the pictures arrived and were hung on the walls of the Dining Room and then rehung at the dais end of the room. They had been bought in London from various galleries, including Tooth's, the Leicester Galleries and Lefevre. With the re-organisation of the buildings at Bangor, the pictures were scattered throughout other parts of the University.
