Wells & Mendip Museum's collection of paintings falls into two groups. The first comprises works commissioned in the 1960s to illustrate the living landscapes of different geological periods, including The Age of the Reptiles and Mammoth in the Great Ice Age. The second group includes 18th and 19th century portraits of local personalities, such as Nicholas Roper, clockmaker of Oakhill.
