Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in Chesterfield was completed in April 2000, followed shortly afterwards by the redevelopment of an empty town centre unit, by Wilkinson. Chesterfield operates a 'Percent for Art Scheme', which resulted in the commissioning of this artwork by Tony Wilkinson. George Large was successfully commissioned to undertake the required works. The four large murals depict living and working in Chesterfield through the years. Tony Wilkinson decided that the murals needed to be on prominent display and easily accessible to the public. The murals were therefore placed on the wall in the Link Walkway at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre.
