In 1941, the Swindon art collection was established by an impressive donation of 21 works by a local businessman H. J. P. Bomford. This collection has been built on and today Swindon Museum and Art Gallery (SM&AG) owns a modern art collection of outstanding quality and importance. The Swindon Collection of Modern British Art consists of around 600 works of art and 300 studio ceramics, made between 1880 and 2017 by artists who lived and worked in Britain. The art collection includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional material but does not currently include film, large sculpture or installations. SM&AG works with The Art Fund and Contemporary Art Society to continue to acquire modern and contemporary works of art. The Swindon Museum Art Collection is managed by Swindon Museum and Art Gallery on behalf of Swindon Borough Council.
