STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. It opened in June 2000, having previously been located in Railway Village as the Swindon Railway Museum. Since the early 1960s the Museum has collected a fine array of objects, paintings, archive material and photographs dating back to the early 1800s. They represent the rich history of a unique railway network. The museum holds a small, but diverse, collection of paintings. The oil paintings that make up the collection are a mix of modern impressionist pieces and traditional artwork, featuring places and people significant to the GWR. Paintings in the collection include 'Railway Town' by Terry Court and 'Paddington Station' by Margaret Neve.
