More about

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye is the recognised National Centre for the Gaelic Language, Arts and Culture. It is part of the University of the Highlands & Islands. Its Visual Archive of contemporary art relating to Gaelic and the Gàidhealtachd is growing all the time. Paintings include work by Frances Walker, Marian Leven, Steven McKenzie and a portrait of the famous poet Sorley MacLean by Peter Edwards. However, there are works in different media by internationally acclaimed Scottish artists such as Will MacLean, John Houston and Kate Whiteford. Artists on the 'Artist in Residence Programme' (funded by Creative Scotland’s 'Creative Futures' scheme) are continuing to donate exciting contemporary work. This includes artists such as Eòghann MacColl, Norman Shaw, Gill Russell, Ross Henriksen and Jessica Ramm. Other works in Sabhal Mòr’s collection are on permanent loan from 'Uinneag dhan Àird an Iar/Window To The West' – a major research project that looked at visual art in Gaelic Scotland.
