The Riverside Museum houses one of the greatest collections of transport and technology in the UK, including objects such as cars, trams, trains and a world-famous ship model collection. It is housed in a state-of-the-art building designed by the internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Many of the transport-themed paintings which are now part of Glasgow Museums’ collection came from wealthy Glaswegian industrialists, who were proud to display their ships, trains and the history of their companies, through generous gifts to the City. Others were purchased for the collection or bequeathed to it. The collection reflects the long association that Glasgow has had with the heavy industry. Paintings that can be viewed in the Riverside Museum include ‘The Last Tram Procession’ by R. H. Wyllie, ‘Govan Ferry’ by Hugh ‘Grecian’ Williams, and L. S. Lowry’s ‘Cranes and Ships, Glasgow Docks’.
