Established in 1969 the Museum of Lincolnshire Life boasts significant agricultural and industrial collections, and a rich and varied social history collection celebrating the culture of Lincolnshire and its peoples from 1750 to the present day. The art collection reflects this culture through works representing topography, military, industry and, not surprisingly for a county famous for its agriculture, farming and livestock. A significant part of the art collection comprises work by a local amateur artist, Miss E. M. C. Morris, who bequeathed many of her paintings, a varied selection of local scenes and the surreal, in the early 1970s, and others have been donated and purchased by the generosity of local people and grant-giving organisations. Notable works include ‘SS Mercian’ by Arthur James Wetherall Burgess, a ship shelled by a German submarine in 1915 whilst transporting the 1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry across the Mediterranean Sea to Egypt; Sybil Hutchinson’s portrait ‘Henry Dudding and his Shepherd, Richard Aves’ and a caricature of William Hornsby, a respected local bank manager.
