The Museum of Gloucester has been on this site since 1893, a grand Victorian building that has recently benefitted from a Heritage Lottery Funded refit. This is a vibrant museum to visit for tourists and locals alike with regular events and exhibitions, exciting activities for children and a café for refreshments. The ground floor displays tell the story of Gloucester through archaeology and natural history, while fine and decorative arts are found on the first floor. The art gallery has a fine collection of paintings, most of which have been donated or bequeathed by local people. Outstanding works held here include 'Gloucester Docks' by John Atkinson Grimshaw, 'View of Gloucester from the North West' by Johannes Vorsterman, and 'Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire, from Dean Hill' by William Turner of Oxford.
