More about

The Museum of Dartmoor Life is in the centre of Okehampton, Devon on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. The Museum is set in a cobbled medieval burgage plot and is spread over three large galleries housed within a Victorian granary built 200 years ago. It tells the story of Dartmoor from pre-history to present time. Visitors can find out how Dartmoor was formed from molten magma millions of years ago. Okehampton, or ‘Oc mund tun’ as it was originally known, is rich in history. The original settlement began about 1089 and was built around the Parish Church on the hill but gradually it settled in the valley. The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1623 and a couple of its buildings date from the 1600s. The Museum holds a fine collection of photographs and tithe maps of the area. The collection includes two thirteenth-century Okehampton Castle bells with a romantic inscription around them. A Bronze Age hut gives an idea of what it was like to live on Dartmoor, as does the wheelwright and blacksmith’s shop, the mine and Dartmoor cottage. Comments from the visitors book include “it’s great for children”, “it’s much bigger than it looks” and “it’s a hidden gem”.
