Established under Royal Charter in 1552, the Society of Merchant Venturers comprises prominent and talented men and women prepared to give their time and skills to contribute to the prosperity and well being of the greater Bristol area and to help enhance the quality of life for all. Today, the Merchant Venturers invest heavily in young people, education, enterprise and entrepreneurship and caring for the elderly. Through their associated entities, they currently provide care and accommodation to over 1,000 older people and help educate over 2,000 young people in the city. They also play an active role in many of Bristol’s charities, administer a wide range of trusts and grants and with the City Council are responsible for the stewardship of the Clifton and Durdham Downs.
