More about

Maryport Maritime Museum is ideally situated at the quayside in the beautiful and historic town of Maryport on the Solway Coast of North West Cumbria. Through the second half of the eighteenth and into the nineteenth century, it grew to become a seaport of some significance, supporting a number of industries. The collections policy is designed not only to reflect this, but also the social and cultural life of the town and surrounding area. The art collection consists primarily of works by artists with local connections. The majority of subjects are relevant to the town and its history. Special mention should be given to the works of William Mitchell and his son James who have their own gallery within the museum.
