Artemis is the artefact and art loan service for Leeds local authority schools. There are over 10,000 unique items within the collection, which has been in existence for approximately 50 years. The majority of the Artemis artefacts are original, although there are some good quality replicas and models. The pictures which make up the art collection are original or limited edition prints. The content of the collection is diverse with areas covered including natural history, ethnography items from around the world, a wide range of items supporting school history topics, geology, sculpture, chairs and ceramics. Due to the variety of objects, schools and other users benefit from receiving a bespoke service. No two loans are the same! The aim of the Artemis collection is to provide children and young people in Leeds with direct access to objects and art from around the world. This helps to develop their cultural learning and provide them with a ‘hands-on’ experience. The multi-sensory nature of working directly with objects means that children and young people of all ages and abilities are able to access the collection in a meaningful way. Schools use the art to support subjects across the curriculum. The pictures are a great stimulus for developing speaking and listening skills, as well as extending and developing the breadth of children and young people’s access to original art.
