The Powys Society Collection consists of literary and artistic archives and memorabilia of the extraordinarily talented Powys family of writers, principally John Cowper, Theodore and Llewelyn Powys. John Cowper Powys has been described as an unknown genius of British letters by critics such as George Steiner and A. N. Wilson. The paintings by Gertrude Powys are by a Powys and of the Powyses and therefore form a unique artistic record of the whole clan and their milieu. The portrait of John by his sister is of considerable interest, as are her pictures of the father of the family, Reverend Charles Francis Powys, and other family members and associates. There are also paintings of the Wessex landscape, which was a source of inspiration and domicile for the family.
