Portsmouth Museums and Visitor Services' art collection has been built up since 1945. It is richest in British work from the eighteenth century onwards. Four themes govern the collecting areas: paintings with local connections, whether depictions of local views and people or by local artists; British art from c.1880 onwards; military history especially relating to the D-Day campaign; and local literary history.
