More about

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is a medieval marvel. Built in 1357 the Hall with its stunning Great Hall, atmospheric Undercroft and peaceful chapel is the least altered Medieval guildhall surviving in Europe. The Hall houses many different and unique collections which provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Hall and the people associated with it. One such collection is that of the oil paintings which has been slowly built up over a period of 300 years. The earliest acquisitions are portraits of Company Members whilst the collection has grown to include landscapes and group portraits. Paintings in the collection include: 'Dutch Snow Scene with Skaters' by Jan Griffier, 'John Etty' by William Etty, 'Old Ouse Bridge' by Joseph Farington and more modern paintings like 'Group Portrait of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York' painted by Peter Mennim in 2003.
