About the collection
Fairfax House is one of the finest Georgian townhouses in England. A classical architectural masterpiece with superb period interiors, Fairfax House transports you to the grandeur of 18th-century city life in York. A stunning collection of furniture, clocks, paintings and decorative arts brings this townhouse to life, creating a special lived-in feeling. With an exciting programme of special events and changing exhibitions, there is always a reason to bring you to Fairfax House.
The Fairfax House collection of art dates primarily from the 18th century and includes portraits, conversation pieces and landscapes. It reflects the period of occupancy by the Fairfax family during the 1760s and the types of artwork that would have normally decorated a Georgian townhouse. The majority of the works have been assembled by one man, Noel Terry, whose interest was in collecting English furniture of the 18th century but also extended to paintings. Where possible, the house has added to this collection with works provenanced to the Fairfax family or key individuals of the 18th century.
