A significant part of Calderdale Museums' historic art collection came from the collections of Alderman Smith. These collections transferred to the Brighouse Corporation and then Calderdale MBC in 1974. The oils principally date to the Victorian period and the collection features important works by artists such as John Atkinson Grimshaw and Marcus Stone. More recent works include pieces by nationally acclaimed local artist Peter Brook.
