‘Mabel Frances Layng’s lively and intimate pictures showing people going about their daily lives during the 1920s are underappreciated gems in our collections and have long been personal favourites. Her bold colours, often strongly outlined in black, betray the influence of Frank Brangwyn, her tutor at the London School of Art, and despite their obviously ‘twenties’ subject matter gives them a timeless feel. Although she was a fine painter in oils, for us her real talent is revealed in watercolours such as this.’ – Chris Copp, Curator, Staffordshire Heritage & Arts
