Curator's Choice: The Messenger of Tethra
John Duncan (1866–1945)
Tethra was a king in Irish Celtic mythology who sent beautiful women as messengers to entice princes. This messenger carries a branch of the Singing Tree. If the branch is laid on someone's pillow it would wake them up and force them to follow the messenger back to Tethra. The artist achieved these beautiful glowing colours by painting in egg tempera.
