Curator's Choice: The Pond at Montfoucault
Pissarro, Camille, 1830–1903
Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) was a French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painter, best known for his rural landscapes.
This work, dated 1875, was painted at the home of his friend and fellow artist Ludovic Piette in Montfoucault, a small village on the border between Normandy and Brittany. It depicts a woman tending a herd of cows by a pond on Piette’s property. The warm tones and heavily worked paint application create a beautiful autumnal effect.
