The Railway Station (detail), oil on canvas by Frith, William Powell, 1819–1909, photo credit: Leicester Museums and Galleries
This is one of Hogarth's most ambitious early works. It features 17 men and women relaxing in a sumptuous interior. The draperies show that the house is in mourning, while the assembled company indulges in conversation, games and the drinking of tea.
A typical Hogarth touch is the mischievous little pug in the foreground, looking straight at the viewer. This is possibly Hogarth’s own dog – he owned at least three pugs in his lifetime, one of them called Trump.
The exquisite Baroque interior is most likely to be the Wollaston family’s London residence in Charterhouse Square. The bust on the mantelpiece probably represents the recently deceased Charlton Wollaston, with the family dressed in 'half-mourning' (sober, often dark-coloured clothing).
Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, managed by Leicester Museums and Galleries, has changing displays of Modern and Old Masters, alongside permanent galleries of Lord Attenborough’s Picasso Ceramics and German Expressionist art, one of the most notable collections outside of Germany.
