Curator's Choice: Tutankhamun's Mask
Burton, Harry, 1879–1940
Tutankhamun’s gold mask, found placed over the head of the pharaoh’s wrapped body, is the most iconic object discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb. For years it was on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and will be the last object moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
This digitally colourised photograph captured by Harry Burton (1879–1940) has, amongst many others, allowed generations to witness the ‘wonderful things’ discovered in the excavation of the Tomb of Tutankhamun by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon.
Howard Carter described Tutankhamun's face from the mask as bearing a 'sad but tranquil expression', later adding that it was 'suggestive of youth overtaken prematurely by death'.
