Curator's Choice: Mrs Mary Cobbold with Her Daughter Anne
Gainsborough, Thomas, 1727–1788
Seated in a rural idyll of a typical Suffolk landscape, the sitters dressed in fashionable contemporary attire are Mary, widow of Thomas Cobbold (1680 – 1752), a maltster from Bury St Edmunds, and their daughter Anne.
The ewe and lamb beautifully reflect the mother and daughter relationship and the painting offers the charming detail of the tiny parakeet on Mary’s hand and the rose on her dress.
