About

A native of Edinburgh, James Pryde (1866 - 1941) spent most of his adult life in London. As young men in the 1890s, he and his brother-in-law William Nicholson, took the art world by storm with their bold and original poster designs inscribed with the single name 'Beggarstaffs'. Pryde subsequently specialised in sombre and theatrical scenes of mystery and imagination, leading critics to hail him as 'The Edgar Allan Poe of Painting'. This is a companion guide to the exhibition 'Rascals & Ruins: the Romantic Vision of James Pryde', at the Fleming Collection.
