This catalogue covers a large area; from the Humber down to Lutterworth, from Skegness across to Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Over 2,900 paintings are illustrated, from 57 collections, on display in museums, schools, colleges, universities, libraries, civic buildings, fire stations and a cricket ground. The diversity of the region is reflected in the subject matter, including agriculture and industry, fishing boats and trawlers, coal mining, quarrying, as well as military, religious and sporting scenes. Alongside historical paintings by Constable, Degas, Lowry, Reynolds, Turner and Wright, hang contemporary works by Bacon, Frost, Hitchens and Marc.
