This first volume of paintings from the London Borough of Camden contains over 2,000 paintings from 10 diverse collections and includes works by Canaletto, Hogarth, Benjamin West, William Orpen, Duncan Grant, Terry Frost and Raqib Shaw. By far the largest collection is that of the Wellcome Library whose paintings offer an insight into the history of health and wellbeing. There are also hospital collections from University College London Hospitals and the Royal Free. The work of young artists at Central Saint Martins and established twentieth-century names such as John Craxton and Prunella Clough in Camden Council’s collection sits alongside Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress at Sir John Soane’s Museum, illustrating the extraordinary richness of work in this most artistic of boroughs.
