In 1928 John Dennithorne came to live in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil to establish a centre to help educate and improve the lives of those hit harshly by the economic depression. Later a second educational settlement began in Merthyr Tydfil. By 1935 hundreds of people were being engaged in many different ways, including a number of arts courses.
In 1944, Merthyr Tydfil Art Society was established as a result of the work at the Merthyr Educational Settlements. Artists Cedric Morris, Esther Grainger and several local members of the community were helping coordinate the formation of the art society, with German surrealist artist Hienz Koppel following later.
