Sustrans have been responsible for commissioning a large number of artworks across the UK, along the national cycle routes - Portrait benches depict locally significant figures nominated by their communities funded by The Big Lottery Fund (2007). Look out for ones near to you.

    The portrait benches represent Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who brought the South Devon Railway to Newton Abbot in 1846; Dr Ivy Williams, who was born in Newton Abbot and became England's first female barrister in 1921; and a clay cutter, representing the local ball clay industry

  • Reculver, Kent

    A Roman woman – there was a fort at Regulbium close to where Reculver Towers stand today; an oyster fisherman – oysters have been farmed in the area since Roman times, and the Whitstable Oyster thrives in the Thames Estuary water, and is celebrated by the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival; and Warner (‘Bill’) Ottley, the pilot who flew on the Dams Raid (617 Squadron RAF) and was shot down near Hamm.

    The statues were of three local heroes: a machinist of the Dagenham Ford strike of 1968; Elm Park solider, Warrant Officer Ian Fisher, who gave his life while serving in Afghanistan in 2013; and musician Billy Bragg.
