Valerius de Saedeleer (1867–1941) and his family were amongst the hundreds of thousands who fled their homeland following the invasion of Belgium by Germany at the start of the Great War. De Saedeleer and fellow artists like George Minne were brought to Wales by Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, responsible for creating the most important collection of Impressionist and Modern British Art in Wales at their family home at Gregynog Hall. The artist lived in Cwmystwyth, a village in Ceredigion, and was inspired by the valleys of Aberystwyth. He and his family returned to Belgium in 1920. Developed in association with Grant Waters, Art Detective Group Leader: South East England, East England and the Midlands.
