Joan Eardley (1921-1963) visited the coastal village of Catterline in Aberdeenshire at the invitation of artist friend Annette Stephen in 1950. From 1954 she first rented a property there and then bought a cottage facing the sea in 1959. Best known for her winter seascapes, waves and and salmon fishing nets painted outside in stormy conditions, her landscapes document a farmed land, many of fields of barley and corn experienced close up. She and Annette were joined by Eardley's companion Lilian Neilson and friend Angus Neil. Her life was tragically cut short by breast cancer, and she died in 1963 at the age of 42.
