Archives of IT is a charity that aims to inspire and inform future professionals through a collection of interviews with leading people associated with the UK IT and Telecommunications industry from its beginnings to the present day. AIT's vision is for the archive to help understanding of the huge impact IT has had in shaping our society, to encourage the study of IT, and inspire interest in careers in the sector.

    Michael Earl is Emeritus Professor of Information Management and Honorary Fellow of Green Templeton College and of Harris Manchester College.


    Michael’s expertise is in the management of IT and strategic management. His current and recent work has been on IT in post-merger integration and on rethinking information as a strategic resource.

  • Dame Stephanie Shirley (b.1933)

    Dame Stephanie 'Steve' Shirley was born in 1933, in Germany. The daughter of a Jewish judge who was pushed out of office when the Nazis came to power in 1933. In 1939, Steve and her sister left Vienna on the Kindertransport and came to England.


    In the 1950s, Steve worked at the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill. In 1959, she moved to CDL Ltd, designers of the ICT 1301 computer. In 1962 she founded software company Freelance Programmers, later F-International.


    The Shirley Foundation is a charitable trust founded by Steve to support and fund research.

    Peter Kirstein is a British computer scientist. He is often recognised as the father of the European Internet. Professor of Computer Communications Systems at UCL in London, he was appointed Commander of the British Empire in 2003. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. In 2003 he was awarded the Postel Award by the Internet Society, and in 2006 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
