Women artists have been overlooked throughout history. Although steps are being taken to redress this imbalance, women remain underrepresented in collections and sometimes it can be difficult to find their works or even to know where to start looking. There are thousands of women artists represented on Art UK, and to give you a place to start exploring their works we have created 26 Curations of women artists, divided up by surname A-Z. The set of Curations contains works by 1,000 female artists in total. You won't find the likes of Frida Kahlo or Hilma af Klint as their works are not in UK public collections (yet), but you will find a wealth of art from works by Eileen Agar to Doris Zinkeisen – and plenty more in between.

Artists featured in this Curation: Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1654 or after), Ethel Léontine Gabain (1883–1950), Caroline Gabriel (1912–1997), Edith Mabel Gabriel (1882–1972), Clare Galloway (b.1973), Marie Antonietta Gambaro (1929–1981), Valerie Ganz (1936–2015), Alexandra Gardner (b.1945), Eliza Draper Gardiner (1871–1955), Grace Gardner (1920–2013), and 57 more

  • Gluck (1895–1978)

The artist Gluck rejected any forename or prefix (such as 'Miss') and consistently broke gender norms. It is impossible to know if Gluck would use non-binary pronouns if alive today. There are people who claim Gluck as non-binary, and others who insist on the artist being a woman (and lesbian). The artist's inclusion in this list is not intended to definitively categorise Gluck as being a particular gender but rather to invite more research to be conducted about the artist – and about every artist on this list.
