Photorealism evolved out of the Pop Art movement in the US during the late 1960's. Mostly focused around the San Francisco Bay area, photorealism was a counter movement to abstract expressionism. Its hallmarks are a reliance on photography for its source material; a mechanical methodology in its application such as gridding or projection - in order to remove the human aspect as much as possible; and a hyper realism in resulting end image.

Remaining interestingly determined, it has evolved in fascinating new directions, especially in Europe. In the UK artists such as Nathan Eastwood and Wayne Clough utilise it to create social commentary. While artist such as Marguerite Horner & Sean Williams evoke memory and loss.
