The earliest roots of abstract painting begin in Europe with the Ukrainian born Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square painting of 1915. Alongside abstracted landscape works by Moscow born Wassily Kandinsky. As the movement evolved it spread across Europe and then to the USA.
Following the Second World War abstraction achieved significant support from the US Government. Who engaged it to act as a form of soft diplomacy through culture. With critic Clement Greenberg helping launch the careers of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning & Clyfford Still.
100 years on and abstract painting is thriving, with a significant group of artists practicing in the UK. Including Susan Gunn, Mary Webb, Julian Brown, Karl Bielik and Terry Green.
