Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2024, the Government Art Collection is a collection of currently approaching 15,000 artworks by British artists or those with a strong connection to the UK, and is used to promote British art, culture and history in more than 365 government buildings both in the UK and abroad. Set up in 1899 with a proposal to spend £150 to help decorate the Foreign Office, an annual fund of £250 was established in 1935 with advice from an advisory committee. Works by living artists were first made in 1944. The majority of the collection is on display in government buildings, and many other works are loaned to exhibitions. Part One: Robert Adams to Anthony Eyton.
