Glynn Vivian Art Gallery was founded by the art collector and philanthropist Richard Glynn Vivian (1835–1910) and opened in Swansea in 1911 with his collection of paintings, drawings and china and an endowment of £10,000. The 20th Century art collection developed in the first half of the 20th Century thanks in large part to its first curator, the artist Grant Murray, who acquired works by significant Welsh artists such as Augustus John, Gwen John and James Dickson Innes; and younger painters including Kyffin Williams and John Elwyn. The collection now holds works by all the major figures in the development of Welsh art in the 20th Century as well as other well-known artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer.
