'Zing's' fluid sense of movement is created by carefully-drawn white ink lines applied in a single movement across the blue surface. Sue Arrowsmith used a ruler with an undulating edge to repeat the same line down the canvas. Despite her attention to detail, 'Zing' seems randomly formed, as if its variations were created freehand. Ink varies in thickness and smudges are left where the ruler was lifted. These human aberrations become part of the painting, giving it a more personal and less mechanical nature.
