After leaving Doncaster Lillford studied at the Royal College of Art In London, where he was taught by, among others, Rodney Burn and Ruskin Spear whose works can both be seen in this gallery.
The painting depicts Yorkshire Main Colliery, which is in the village of Edlington, just to the South West of Doncaster. The first shafts for the colliery were sunk in 1909, and coal continued to be produced at Edlington until the mine shut in 1985.
