David Frederick William was born in the East End of London. He was seriously wounded twice and was severely shell-shocked in World War I. He came to Langton Matravers to visit the family of his great friend on the battlefield, who was killed in 1916. He stayed and married his best friend's only sibling. He trained in London as an architect. He designed many of the new houses and extensions to houses in South Perbeck from 1922–1960. He painted in the evenings as relaxation, but gave away most of his work to friends and neighbours. He found the sea and the local cliffs very therapeutic.
