Fergusson referred to this carving in a letter he sent to Margaret Morris in August 1916: 'I've been at it two afternoons and have done three sides of a stone, nearly square. It resembles somewhat the one you've seen. Same kind of stone...'. The piece that Fergusson refers to was 'The Garden' (accession number 1992.429).

Here Fergusson uses deep carving to convey an unusually overt sexual symbolism as a celebration of regenerative power. Between 1915 and 1917 he spent the autumn months at his mother's home in Bonnyrigg on the outskirts of Edinburgh. There, in the spacious garden, he made several stone carvings.
