The sculpture was made from an oak tree which had come down in the 1987 storms. It is an impressive seated wolf with his head raised howling to indicate that he has found Saint Edmund's head, indicated by the crown on top of a post, in a thicket. After Saint Edmund had been killed by Danish invaders he was decapitated, and while his body had been found his head was lost in a thicket, until found by the wolf. Here the head is represented by the crown on a short nearby post.
