One of a large group of winter landscapes painted by de Momper. He repeated this particular landscape at least twice but with different figures. It may be that the figures in this picture were painted by a collaborator. Although the landscape is plainly North European, the setting is intended to represent the route from the Holy Land into Egypt where the Holy Family took refuge from Herod's persecution (Matthew 2: 13–15).
