At first a gilder and frame-maker in his father’s shop, Schelfhout became a pupil of the decorative painter Joannes Breckenheijmer and began to exhibit landscapes in 1815. His pictures were deeply indebted to the example of seventeenth-century Dutch art. But he was also influenced by the fresh, lively style of contemporary English and French landscape painting which he discovered during a trip to Paris in 1830. He enjoyed a European reputation, particularly for his winter landscapes. He had many pupils, including Johann Barthold Jongkind.
