The perspective of this painting is rather odd as the street appears much wider than it actually is, with enough room for a stagecoach, a carrier’s cart belonging to Homewoods the millers, and a pony and trap. The buildings are painted in some detail, although one is given greater prominence. This is Blackwell confectioners’ shop, which was founded in about 1817 by James Blackwell at No. 5 Windsor Street, where it remained until 1929. It is believed that the artist was the portrait artist and painter Thomas Gell, a local portrait artist and painter was James Blackwell’s father in law. He painted this work c.1830–1840 as it shows St Margaret’s Church after the alterations of 1820, and the peoples’ clothes appear to be of that date as well.
