In this painting the castle symbolises the success and security of the English monarchy. The castle looks strong, impenetrable and timeless. Given the political upheavals of the 17th century, with the civil war of 1642 to 1646, execution of Charles I and the eventual restoration of the monarchy, this picture is clearly royalist propaganda. It has the underlying message that the English royal family is an enduring and powerful force for good.
