The windmill of Windmill Hill was operated by generations of the Robinson family. It is uncertain when the windmill was built, but it was eventually demolished in 1904. At the centre of the painting is St Mary Magdalene church, built at the top of the hill in 1883, in many ways representing the high social standing of the area. The church was designed by William Butterfield, and built in memory of Philip Twells, a wealthy banker and one time MP for the City of London. Recently the chancel walls and ceiling, created for the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, have been restored.
