William Weir was born in Glasgow in 1794 and, following medical training at the University of Glasgow, practised for a short time in Lochwinnoch. He took a junior surgical appointment at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1829 and was appointed Physician there in 1840. President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1847 to 1849, he was for many years Treasurer and Collector of the Widows' Fund. William Weir was the first historian of the Faculty and published an address on the 'Origin and Early History of the Faculty' in 1864. He died in 1876.
